A stress fracture in a vertebra is called spondylolysis. Stress on the lower back especially during repetitive and excessive activities during sports may result in a stress fracture. Some people are born with thin vertebral bones that are susceptible to getting spondylolysis.

Spondylolysis may not cause symptoms. It can cause lower back pain. The pain may feel like a muscle strain that spreads across your lower back.
